As famous a Cuban brand as there is in the world of cigars, the H. Upmann brand dates back to 1844. The famous request of President John F. Kennedy to his press secretary, Pierre Salinger, to obtain these Cuban cigars on the evening prior to the declaration of the American trade embargo in 1961, was for Petit Upmanns. Available in a stunning range of handmade and machine-made sizes, the brand offers a mild to medium strength.

Further Information about this fine Cuban Cigar

Herman Upmann was a banker from Germany who so loved Cuban cigars that he moved to Havana in 1844 and set up as both banker and cigar maker. His bank closed in the early 1920s but his cigars live on as a fine example of an elegant light to medium-flavoured Habano.

All the leaf in H. Upmann is from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco region.  Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century adorn the box — as does Herman Upmann’s personal signature.

This Cuban line is a great example of diversity of flavors and strength within the same line of cigars.  Look for very different strengths based on size and vitola. The Magnum 46 will be seen by most as a powerhouse 6 12 of 10 while the very similar Conniseur No 1 seems more a medium with softer rounder flavors.  The line generally imparts dry tea, nuttiness, a slight spice and even come citrus.  Again, looks for differences with each and enjoy.

Cuban Cigar Review

H Upmann No 2

It is always a pleasure to get a nice surprise from a cigar and the proof of my ever changing palate.

I was a little apprehensive about lighting the Upmann No 2 as I didn't have any remarkable recollections of the cigar from past attempts.

I was in for a pleasant surprise. I was hit with cedar and tobacco flavours and something I couldn't put my finger on.

A little longer and it became evident. I had tried this milk chocolate about a month ago that was infused with the essence of chili's in the chocolate. This was what I was getting on the cigar.

A slight papyrus note also showed but was subtle and understated. The cedar subsided in the second third giving way to the tobacco and spicey milk chocolate sensations with a faint hint of leather which remained to the end.

This was a very fine late afternoon cigar paired with Woodford Reserve Bourbon which complimented the smoke nicely. I am confident in giving the H. Upmann No 2 a very conservative 90 points.
