As famous a Cuban brand as there is in the world of cigars, the H. Upmann brand dates back to 1844. The famous request of President John F. Kennedy to his press secretary, Pierre Salinger, to obtain these Cuban cigars on the evening prior to the declaration of the American trade embargo in 1961, was for Petit Upmanns. Available in a stunning range of handmade and machine-made sizes, the brand offers a mild to medium strength. Further Information about this fine Cuban Cigar
Herman Upmann was a banker from Germany who so loved Cuban cigars that he moved to Havana in 1844 and set up as both banker and cigar maker. His bank closed in the early 1920s but his cigars live on as a fine example of an elegant light to medium-flavoured Habano. All the leaf in H. Upmann is from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco region. Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century adorn the box — as does Herman Upmann’s personal signature. Cuban Cigar Review H Upmann Connoisseur No 1 robusto 4 7/8 x 50 reviewed by Cameron M I enjoyed this pleasant cigar mid-morning with a glass of ice water. The silky smooth medium shade wrapper had a slight uneven burn which didn't hinder my enjoyment. The first half of the cigar I tasted light chocolate with notes of dried hazelnuts.
This is a light to medium cigar I would rate for strength 4/10. In the last half of the cigar the strength and flavors intensified.
My overall rating out of a 100 is 89. Cigar Aficionado Magazine last rated this cigar a 92/100 Feb 2011 CM 2012
