San Cristóbal de la Habana was the original name of Havana, Cuba’s capital city, when it was founded in 1519; San Cristóbal (St Christopher) in honour of Columbus and La Habana after an Indian name for the site.

San Cristóbal de la Habana cigars were introduced in 1999 as a tribute to the city’s long history on the threshold of the new Millennium.

Its range is composed of four vitolas with a light to medium flavour using tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region. Each is named after one of the fortresses that defended the city in the days when it was the hub of Spain’s Latin American Empire.

The latest and probably the last of the new series of Cuban cigar brands launched since 1996 has been given the original name of the city of Havana when it was founded by settlers back in 1519 - San Cristóbal (St. Christopher) de La Habana. The brand boasts four sizes, each of which is named after one of the fronts that defended the city in its heyday, as the hub of the Spanish empire in Latin America. Two of the sizes, La Fuerza and El Morro, are entirely new and are unique to the San Cristóbal brand.

Many find this brand to be the only Cuban that offers a true sweetness in its flavor. A subtle mead tone (honey wine) is found along with leather, fresh woods and earthiness.  A unique Cuban brand that stands out as a must try for any true Cuban cigar lover.

Cuban Cigar Review

San Cristobal de la Habana Principe
4 x 42 gorda Review by Graham S

San Cristobal de la Habana's entry into the petit corona size is the Principe, this one having not quite a claro wrapper, coming in at a 2 of 6 on wrapper shade.

While commonly referred to as tres petit corona, this is actually considered a "short", due to the 42 ring gauge size.

I was leery of lighting this one up as I had been off of the brand for a while but this turned out to be a welcome surprise.

I just cracked a bottle of Belle Glos Pinot Noir, a great wine, and was hoping that the cigar would do it justice.

Well, it sure did!

The initial flavors that hit my palate were toasted almonds, a slight leather undertone with oaky notes and raisins. Very nice! As the cigar progressed, the oak influence became more apparent but the nutty flavor leaned more towards walnut than almond.

The woody, nutty influence carried through to the end of the cigar ending in a smooth, soft, balanced finish.

It turned out to be a very nice accompaniment to a fine wine.

The strength would rate a 5 of 10 and I have no problem giving this cigar a solid 92 of 100.

CA Magazine rated this cigar an 89/100 Aug 2010
