Established by Jose Gener in 1865, the name roughly means "valley of Monterrey," a particularly fertile site in the Vuelta Abajo, which had been farmed by Gener since at least 1860. This Cuban cigar offers a lighter flavour and a wide range of sizes, the largest of which are much celebrated. The Le Hoyo series was introduced about 1970 and presents a stronger flavour

Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Luis y Martinez, which lies at the heart of theVuelta Abajo tobacco region. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, can be reached through a gate on the town’s main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. José Gener. 1860’.  "Hoyo" literally means a "hole’ and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.

José Gener, a Catalan, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.  The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey’s blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity. The best-known sizes are the Double Corona and the Epicure Nos. 1 and 2

This Cuban cigar line offers the signature woodiness that people refer to when talking about cigar flavor profiles. Other hints would include leather, cocoa, brown sugar, latte and others.  Strength ranges from mild to just below medium and the Double Corona is often refered to as the finest DC in the world.

Cigar Review

EDICION LIMITADA 2011 HOYO DE MONTERREY SHORT HOYO PIRAMIDES

 Measures: 46 ring gauge x 5 1/3"

Reviewed by  DFraser 2012

This size does not appear in the usual range of the brand portfolio and the cigar is distinguished by a careful selection of leaves - wrapper, filler and binder - which have been aged for a period of at least 2 years. The dark wrapper dressing comes from the top leaves of the Tapado - shade grown black Cuban tobacco plant.

Received late in 2011, this LE from Hoyo de Monterrey is similar to past releases by the brand. The mini pyramide is a nice size. A fairly robust cigar with nice dark hints of leather, currant and burnt coffee. A spice at the finish offers earthy tones that may be due to it being fairly young. I will keep some in my humidor to breath until the tannins are reduced, which should improve the cigar quite a bit, given time. CA Magazine rated it a 91, I would give the one I smoked a solid 90. Presented in boxes of ten cigars, they are a reasonable price for a Cuban limited edition when compared to others.
