Romeo y Julieta

Developed in 1875, this brand of Cuban cigars immediately showed its quality by winning gold medals in four universal expositions between 1885 and 1900. Named for the lovers in William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name (written circa 1596), the brand also is traditionally credited with the introduction of the "Churchill" shape in honour of the British statesman Winston Churchill.

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origins of Romeo y Julieta as a Habano date back to 1875.

The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th Century under the direction of Don "Pepin" Fernandez, a talented promoter, who was amongst the first to recognise the power of the cigar band. During his hey day no less than 20,000 different bands were used in production.

Winston Churchill became a devotee of Romeo y Julieta. Since his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band but it has also served to describe the marque’s most famous size measuring 7 inches (178 mm) by 47 ring gauge — the Churchill.

More information about this fine Cuban cigar

The Romeo line is a vast array of very different cigars.  The standard description of most Romeo y Julieta Cubans is peppery, spicey with big flavors that include dark roast coffee, some herbal notes and some citrus or dark berry hints.

The Churchill cigars, Short Churchill, Wide Churchill and actual Churchill, all seem to have a slightly different blend to them.  Less strong cigars that offer coffee and cream, a little wood and leather and some notes of soft spice.

Cuban Cigar Review

Romeo y Julieta Belicoso

belicoso 5 1/2 x 52

Review by Cameron M

This is a well constructed cigar with a claro wrapper (light) a 2 out of 6.

I found the Romeo y Julieta Belicoso to be a light to medium cigar.

There was a spiciness to this enjoyable cigar. In the first half of the cigar there was a definite note of honey with sublime notes of cedar. The last half there were faint reminders of dried flowers and hints of tea.

I enjoyed this cigar as an after dinner cigar. I paired this wonderful cigar with a single malt Macallan Select Oak whiskey, give it a try and your palette will thank you.

My overall rating is 92/100

Cigar Aficonado Magazine rated this cigar a 91/100 in Nov 2011
